Year 6º Primaria
On the third period, Noemí and Rita went over to Primary School to observe Cristina teaching her group of 6º Primaria.
Every single day, she does spelling (around 21 words) by drawing them, putting them in alphabetical order, defining them using their own words and looking for a synonym for that word in particular. Cristina also gives them a dictation including the words they have revised. We noticed that when her students make a slight mistake, she clears her throat. But, if they make a big mistake, she usually passes the question on to another student. Whenever they do a dictation, first she reads at a normal pace, then they listen, never copy. Third, copy very slowly and finally they revise.
Curiously enough, the students love parsing, and somehow, we’re not surprised at all because of the way she deals with it. She divides them into four groups of four or six people depending on the kind of slate they’re working with. So, two groups work on their repective desks wrapped in iron-flex. Another one on a laminated board and the last group on the traditional blackboard. One of the sentences to parse was: ‘The president was aware the situation would cause trouble’. If they didn’t know a part of speech, the looked it up in the dictionary provided. An amazing idea for Secondary low achievers.
The students were really well-behaved and engaged in their task to the full. We really enjoyed it.
